We thought that attractiveness is a subjective matter, however research from scientists at the University of Queensland suggest that beards have a profound impact on how you are perceived by the opposite sex.
So is beard sexy?
According to a 2016 study, conducted by researchers in the University of Queensland, Australia, beards could be a crucial factor in determining one´s romantic future. The study surveyed 8520 women, and showed them images manipulated by the team of researchers to show the same men in different stages of beard growth. They catagorized the pictures from less to more bearded, showing clean shaven, light stubble (5 days of growth) heavy stubble (10 days of growth) and lastly a thick beard representing around a month of growth. The female participants were divided into 3 groups. The first group were only asked to rate the men in terms of overall attractiveness. The second group were also asked about short-term attractiveness (one-night stand) and the third group were asked about long-term attractiveness (husband, relationship-potential).The answers were published in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology, revealed a variety of factors with regard to attractiveness, but the overall tendency was that the women were most attracted to the men sporting heavy stubble, followed by short stubble. The men with a full beard together with the clean shaven men, were in the bottom of the scale.
So what level of beard growth was the most appealing for a short-team relation?
The results showed that light stubble was the most popular, closely followed by the heavy stubble, indicating that the short-bearded scruffy look (a sexy beard), is the most popular for a one night stand with no commitments. However, when it comes to picking a long-term relationship, with the potential of starting a family, the more facial hair the better, the men with heavy stubble and especially full beards were the clear winner. This suggests that men who wish to commit to a long-term relationship might do better if they shave less often. The researchers conclude: “Our findings confirm that beardedness affects judgments of male socio-sexual attributes and suggest that an intermediate level of beardedness is most attractive while full-bearded men may be perceived as better fathers who could protect and invest in offspring,” Thus, the clear loser in the study, when it comes to attracting females short and long-term, is the clean-shaven.
